Another Rejection

I got rejected to Sheridan's BAA animation program today. :/

I want to blame it on the fact that I'm an international student, and that my chances of getting in are significantly lower than my friends...when I compare my portfolio to theirs I feel we are evenly matched. But I can't really say anything until I see the scores.

It just makes me wonder....what the hell am I doing wrong?

SO many people tell me I've got what it takes, they expect to see me succeed, and then I fail. Am I just bad at putting together portfolios? What is going on?

Ugh, I'm really hoping LCAD will accept me now. I need the ego boost, and one of my close friends is going there next year and trying to convince me to come with...I am tempted...but I need to get accepted first, a thing which just isn't happening for me these days

  1. sorry to hear that... it always sucks to get the big R... although I hear LCAD have an excellent program... so good luck with that... just curious ... how do you know you got rejected by Sheridan? How did they inform you? I'm still waiting to hear and i've just seen a bunch of people saying they've been accepted... but on the access sheridan site .. i see "under consideration"

  2. If it says under consideration, it means they still haven't made a decision. It will change to "firm admit" if you get in or "refused admit" if you don't get in...I'm not sure what it says if you get wait-listed? Just keep checking back, they're updating periodically

  3. ok... wonder why they update periodically... this is stressing me out... seems a strange way to do it. GOOD LUCK on LCAD - they give out lots of scholarships!!! and besides... where would you rather spend winter??? Oakville or SoCal???

  4. I guess they are going through each file individually or something. Good luck to you too!
Yea, I'm hoping they give me a big bag of money if they accept me. And you're so right, I'd MUCH rather be living in Laguna Beach than Oakville

  5. thanks... it's hard to be feeling good when you see others posting they've been accepted, so i don't know what's happening with my app. I hear LCAD pretty much takes all the animation applicants... not that they have no standards... but it's the best kept secret out there and they don't get enough applicants... and they get a lot of donations from the very wealthy around Laguna Beach art community so pretty much everyone gets some sort of a scholarship

  6. Yea, I was the first person I know to get rejected so that was fun. Can I ask who you are? Lol.

    Yea, I know a lot of people who have gotten in there and gotten scholarships. Last year they were pestering me to finish my application (I filled out the app but never sent a portfolio) up until September, so I assume they still had seats. I feel good about my portfolio, but who knows, I felt good about my last two portfolios and they got rejected >_<;;

  7. lol...right, sorry... I'm Ben... in my desperation to find out about where sheridan was with applications - i searched "sheridan animation accepted" on google within the last 24 hour time frame... your blog came up.

I've looked at your portfolio for sheridan on your blog here and it looks better than other portfolios I've seen that were accepted last year - the only thing maybe is that on your storyboard... maybe you pushed the envelope on "opening the box" too much, i.e. a phone box, i've seen probably the best objects drawing every get rejected and get 0's because of shading etc, also your objects drawing didn't use "exactly" all they laid out for requirements in the guidelines - those two components count for a lot of marks.... but what do i know? I can't really see any reason why you would have been rejected.... but these things happen for a reason... so maybe LCAD is going to be a much better option

  8. check this out... i think this piece is brilliant... so creative... the apple tree etc... yet they got 0's - completely absurd http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&section=&q=sheridan+portfolio+objects#/d1xu2pr

  9. Oh crazy. Didn't know my blog was showing up on random google searches.

Yea, I definitely feel like my storyboard was my weakest part...I should have spent more time on it. Gah. Oh well, too late now...unless I end up appealing? Which I might. If my score was high enough. Apparently you don't know if you're waitlisted until you get your marks back in the mail.
As for the objects, I was banking on the fact that they wouldn't be too particular. At an info session I attended last fall the guy who was leading it said he wasn't concerned with people following the exact requirements, as long as the work was good.
I honestly think I was rejected because I'm an international student, and it's twice as competitive. There are a lot of asian applicants who are freaking amazing out there...all my canadian friends here are at about the same level as me.
The portfolio review staff looks for something very specific. Creativity to them doesn't really matter. Sure, they want to see an interesting idea, but it has too look like it belongs to Sheridan, like it is a Sheridan work. The school most definitely has a particular style. Perhaps it just isn't meant for me.

  10. This year was also what they called a "boom" year...Last year there were about 600 applicants. This year there were over 1,000, which made the standard a lot higher

  11. do you know what you got for a score?

  12. no, they'll mail back the marks before the end of april. I'm really curious as to what they were.

  13. Just wanted to say that I feel your pain...I'm currently trying to get into a grad school program and just got my third rejection letter. I googled "rejected from art school" and found your blog. (Sad way to find it, I know.) I hope you'll keep up your good work...I know you'll get in somewhere great, soon. Best of luck!
